International Energy Agency Orders Historic 400 Million Barrel Oil Reserve Release

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has unanimously agreed to release 400 million barrels from its emergency oil reserves, marking the largest collective release in its history. The decision follows an emergency meeting held at the IEA’s Paris headquarters amid rising oil prices triggered by conflicts in the Middle East, specifically following the United States’ military actions against Iran.

IEA Coordinated Action in Response to Middle East Conflict

The 32 member countries of the IEA, which include G7 nations and other developed economies, convened on March 10, 2026, to assess the impact of the Middle East tensions on global oil markets. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol described the oil market disruptions as “unprecedented in scale,” emphasizing the necessity of a unified global response. The IEA holds strategic reserves totaling over 1.2 billion barrels, alongside an additional 600 million barrels in industry stocks.

This release represents the sixth collective drawdown in the IEA’s roughly 50-year history, surpassing previous actions during events such as the Gulf War in 1991, the 2005 hurricane damage to U.S. refineries, and the dual releases in 2022 amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The combined oil released in those 2022 actions totaled 182.7 million barrels, less than half of the current release.

Market Impact and U.S. Response

Before the conflict escalation, crude oil prices ranged between $60 and $70 per barrel. Prices surged, hitting $115 per barrel on Monday, the highest since 2022. Some analysts suggest the market is beginning to stabilize due to signals that the conflict may be short-lived and effective military advances by U.S. forces.

President Donald Trump, speaking in Kentucky, highlighted the agreement, stating the move “will substantially reduce oil prices.” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum dismissed concerns that the U.S. was unprepared for the oil market impact, attributing the challenges mainly to Iran’s threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil transit route. Burgum noted that cooperation with regional allies would address such disruptions.
