A fraud detection technology developed by Marine veteran Alex Martin, inspired by lessons from the Iraq War, is now used by major insurers and government agencies to identify fraudulent activities.
Military Origins and Rapid Vetting Success
Alex Martin designed the Clearspeed voice-based vetting platform after witnessing insider attacks during the Iraq War, where vetted local forces sometimes turned against coalition troops. The system assesses risk by analyzing vocal traits during automated calls with quick yes-or-no answers. Early adoption by U.S. Special Operations Command demonstrated its speed and effectiveness by screening 715 Afghan commando recruits in under 20 hours, a process that traditionally took months.
Clearspeed’s military clientele includes the Department of Defense and U.S. intelligence agencies. It has raised $110 million in funding, including support from retired General David Petraeus.
Commercial and Policy Adoption to Fight Fraud
Insurance giant Allianz credited Clearspeed’s technology with detecting approximately £92.6 million (about $115 million) in fraudulent claims during the first half of 2025. Allianz’s Chief Claims Officer highlighted the platform’s role in increasing disruption of fraud attempts.
Clearspeed is actively engaging U.S. policymakers about expanding its use for combating benefits fraud and enhancing screening processes amid rising concerns about fraud risks, particularly with increased use of artificial intelligence by fraudsters. The company spent around $272,500 on federal lobbying in 2025 to support these efforts.
Political and Legislative Interest in Fraud Prevention
Former military personnel now serving in Congress recognize Clearspeed’s potential to improve fraud detection and secure national interests. Rep. Pat Harrigan, a former Army Green Beret, and Rep. Russell Fry have expressed support for deploying such technologies to assist with border security, visa vetting, and safeguarding federal programs.
The Department of Justice recently established a division focused on national fraud enforcement targeting fraud against federal programs, aligning with broader government efforts to intensify fraud deterrence.
Martin emphasized that Clearspeed was developed with lives on the line during combat, and its adaptation for protecting taxpayers and national security continues that mission.
