Students at Old Dominion University (ODU) disarmed Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a 36-year-old former Army National Guard soldier and convicted ISIS supporter, during a shooting that killed one person and injured two others on March 12, 2026. Authorities are investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.
Suspect and Shooting Details
Jalloh, who reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he opened fire inside the Virginia university, was subdued by ROTC cadets before law enforcement arrived. FBI Special Agent in Charge Dominique Evans credited the cadets’ intervention with preventing further attacks. ODU Police Chief Garrett Shelton confirmed Jalloh was pronounced dead at the scene, though officials have not detailed the cause of death.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger identified the deceased victim as Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, a devoted ROTC instructor at ODU. Two others injured in the shooting were treated at local hospitals and remain in stable condition.

Authorities disclosed that Jalloh was convicted in 2017 for providing material support to ISIS and released in 2024. A naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Sierra Leone, he served in the Virginia National Guard before leaving the military after being influenced by online lectures from Anwar al-Aulaqi, a former Al-Qaeda leader.
Investigations revealed Jalloh attempted to acquire firearms in North Carolina and Virginia and had met with ISIS members in Nigeria. The FBI is assisting local authorities as the probe continues.
