Exiled Iranian crown prince Reza Pahlavi announced he is prepared to lead a transitional government in Iran “as soon as the Islamic Republic falls.” His statement came amid escalating conflict in the region and the recent appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader.
Pahlavi’s Transition Plan and Leadership Role
Pahlavi, son of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, said he has spent months developing a plan to ensure stable governance if the current regime collapses. In a social media statement, he noted that he and a network of “capable individuals” inside and outside Iran have been identified to form a transitional system. This government, under his leadership, would aim to quickly restore order, security, freedom, and prosperity.
The crown prince emphasized the transition would align with what he calls the “Iran Prosperity Project,” inviting Iranians with experience to participate in rebuilding the country.
Context of Conflict and Political Shift
The announcement comes as conflict involving Iranian and allied forces has intensified, with U.S. and Israeli strikes reportedly killing nearly 50 Iranian regime figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Last week, Iran’s Assembly of Experts appointed Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new supreme leader.
Pahlavi has publicly rejected any political outcome that includes continued influence by the current regime. He insists on a “clean break” that would allow Iranians to freely elect their future leadership through democratic elections, stating that “only the ballot box should determine the outcome.”
Calls for International Support
In recent remarks on Fox News, Pahlavi urged the international community, particularly the United States, to support a democratic transition that respects the Iranian people’s free choice. He highlighted the need for Western democracies to acknowledge and back an electoral process free from the current regime’s control.
