Iran Conflict Pushes Gas Prices Up 50 Cents Per Gallon Nationwide

Gas prices in the U.S. have surged by an average of 50 cents per gallon since the start of Operation Epic Fury against Iran on February 28, reaching a national average of $3.54 per gallon as of March 10, according to AAA. Diesel prices also increased to $4.72 per gallon amid ongoing volatility in global oil markets, driven by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Political Impact on GOP Energy Messaging

The rise in fuel costs is challenging the Republican Party’s economic messaging ahead of the November midterm elections. Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have previously highlighted low gas prices as a key campaign achievement. During his February 27 State of the Union address, Trump cited gasoline prices below $2.30 per gallon in many states, contrasting with the increase following the onset of Operation Epic Fury.

Trump described the current fuel price surge as “a very small price to pay” in a Truth Social post, which contrasts with his earlier criticism of high gas prices under the Biden administration. Trump’s 2024 campaign focused on ending what he called Biden’s “war on American energy” and promised to lower gas prices from their peak of over $5 per gallon in mid-2022.

Democratic Response and Market Outlook

Democrats have criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the conflict-related price increase. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer urged the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to ease supply constraints in the Middle East. Senator Angus King also called the conflict “unnecessary” in reference to rising gas prices.

Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers express confidence that the price increases are temporary and linked to specific disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Senator Steve Daines referred to a potential resolution in weeks and emphasized the importance of securing safe passage through the vital shipping route to stabilize prices.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described the price spikes as “temporary” and said Americans can expect stabilization once Operation Epic Fury’s national security goals are met.
