Virginia Democrats Send Gun Control Bill to Governor Spanberger

Virginia Democrats have forwarded a comprehensive gun control package to Gov. Abigail Spanberger, while West Virginia lawmakers consider legislation to expand legal access to machine guns. This divergence underscores a stark contrast in gun policy approaches between the neighboring states.

Virginia Advances Broad Firearm Restrictions

The gun control bill, introduced by Democratic state Sen. Saddam Salim of Dunn Loring, targets a wide array of firearms and related features. It proposes banning semi-automatic center-fire pistols with magazines over 15 rounds, rifles with detachable magazines, and weapons equipped with collapsible or thumbhole stocks or threaded barrels. The bill aims to gradually reduce assault weapons in circulation without retroactively criminalizing their possession.

Gov. Spanberger’s office expressed a commitment to reviewing the legislation, emphasizing the governor’s background as a former federal law enforcement officer and mother concerned about school safety. However, it has not confirmed whether she plans to sign the bill.

During Senate debate, Republican lawmakers criticized the measure as overly broad and harmful to law-abiding gun owners. Sen. Bill Stanley, R-Rocky Mount, argued that the bill unfairly targets responsible citizens, while other Republicans highlighted difficulties understanding the proposed firearm classifications.

West Virginia Considers Expanding Machine Gun Access

In contrast, West Virginia’s Republican-dominated legislature is debating the Public Defense and Provisioning Act, which would allow residents to legally obtain machine guns. State Sens. Chris Rose and Zachary Maynard, both Republicans, cited the Second Amendment and the 2008 Supreme Court ruling in D.C. v. Heller as justifications for broadening access to these firearms.

The lawmakers assert the bill addresses “a longstanding issue” related to individual rights under the militia clause, emphasizing the state’s interest in preserving methods to resist tyranny.

Political Divergence Between Neighboring States

Virginia’s Democratic majority, strengthened after the 2025 elections, pursues tighter gun restrictions amid concerns about assault weapons and school safety. Meanwhile, West Virginia Republicans hold supermajorities in both legislative chambers and advocate expanding gun rights, reflecting sharply different political and cultural landscapes despite the states’ shared history.
