Israeli intelligence identified the brother of Ayman Muhammad Ghazali, the accused attacker of a Michigan synagogue, as a Hezbollah commander killed in an Israeli airstrike days before the attack. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) disclosed Sunday that Ibrahim Muhammad Ghazali managed weapons operations within Hezbollah’s Badr Unit, responsible for launching numerous rockets into Israel during the ongoing conflict.
Hezbollah Commander Killed Before U.S. Attack
The IDF statement confirmed Ibrahim Ghazali’s elimination occurred during an airstrike targeting Hezbollah military infrastructure. His brother, Ayman Ghazali, reportedly carried out the March 12 attack in West Bloomfield, Michigan, less than a week after Israeli strikes reportedly killed two of their brothers and other family members in Lebanon.
Ayman Ghazali drove a truck loaded with fireworks and gasoline into Temple Israel and engaged in a gunfight with security personnel before fatally shooting himself. Surveillance footage shows him purchasing over $2,000 in fireworks days before the incident.
Regional Tensions and Diplomatic Talks
The connection between the Michigan attack and Hezbollah highlights the role of Iranian-backed proxies in escalating violence amid the broader U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran and its allies. Israeli and Lebanese officials are reportedly preparing for direct talks in the coming days to address the conflict in Lebanon and Hezbollah’s disarmament, with involvement from Jared Kushner and Israeli delegates.
Hezbollah initiated hostilities earlier in March by firing rockets into Israel, citing retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, which triggered widespread Israeli bombing campaigns targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.
Concurrent U.S. Attacks Some With Terror Links
Authorities noted another violent incident near the same timeframe at Old Dominion University, Virginia, where a former federal inmate with ISIS ties killed one person and injured two before being subdued. These events underscore ongoing concerns about terror-inspired attacks linked to Middle Eastern militant groups operating or influencing actors in the U.S.
The FBI continues investigations related to the Michigan synagogue attack. The Israeli military shared footage of Hezbollah militants moving rockets in southern Lebanon, emphasizing the group’s active engagement in the conflict.
