The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced on Tuesday that the bloc is discussing with Gulf countries potential diplomatic proposals aimed at ending the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States in a way that allows all parties to preserve dignity. Kallas emphasized that stopping the war is in everyone’s interest and highlighted the EU’s readiness to facilitate talks to resolve the crisis.
EU Consults Regional Partners for Peace Proposal
Kallas told Reuters that the EU has been engaging with regional countries including Gulf states, Jordan, and Egypt to explore whether a diplomatic initiative could be advanced for Iran, Israel, and the U.S. to “get out of this situation so that everybody saves face.” She noted the difficulty inherent in ending wars once started and stressed the EU’s willingness to support diplomatic efforts to halt hostilities.
Kallas Rejects Military Escalation in Strait of Hormuz
Responding to recent U.S. statements about deploying warships to the Strait of Hormuz to counter Iranian threats, Kallas said, “Nobody is ready to put their people in harm’s way” in the region. She underlined the need for diplomatic solutions to keep the critical waterway open to avoid crises in food, fertilizer, and energy supplies affecting global markets.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted over the weekend that America has severely degraded Iran’s military capabilities and called for allied nations, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK, to send warships to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains secure and accessible. Trump also reiterated ongoing U.S. operations targeting Iranian military assets along the coastline.
