Trump Says White House Doctors Treated Florida Congressman After Terminal Diagnosis

President Donald Trump stated on March 16 that White House doctors intervened to treat Rep. Neal Dunn following what Trump described as a “terminal” diagnosis. The Florida Republican lawmaker was reportedly at risk of dying by June before receiving emergency surgery coordinated by the White House medical team.

During remarks at the White House alongside House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., Trump said he was informed about Dunn’s critical condition and insisted on medical assistance. Johnson confirmed that White House doctors arranged for Dunn to be treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. There, Dunn underwent emergency surgery that significantly improved his condition.

“The man has a new lease on life. He acts like he’s 30 years younger,” Johnson said. Trump praised the doctors as “miracle workers” who acted swiftly to save the congressman’s life within hours of being contacted.

Rep. Neal Dunn’s Background and Retirement Plans

Rep. Neal Dunn, a physician and former Army surgeon representing Florida’s 2nd Congressional District, announced in January that he would not seek re-election after five terms in Congress. In his retirement statement, Dunn cited a desire to “pass the torch” to new conservative leaders and spend time with family in Panama City.

Dunn highlighted his legislative focus on lower taxes, military and veterans issues, healthcare innovation, and national security concerns involving China and Russia.

As of mid-March 2026, 60 members of the House of Representatives, including 37 Republicans, have announced they will not seek re-election.
