Zoey McVoy, a Florida high school senior, suffered multiple serious injuries during a skiing accident in Vail, Colorado, while on spring break. The incident occurred Monday at the renowned ski resort, where McVoy was visiting as a guest of a friend.
Extent of Injuries and Medical Response
McVoy sustained a brain bleed, ruptured spleen, eight broken ribs, and a brain concussion, along with facial fractures including a shattered eye socket and forehead injuries requiring surgical repair with titanium plates. After initial assessment by ski patrol and local hospital staff underestimated the severity of her injuries, she was airlifted to Denver Health Hospital for emergency surgery. Surgeons treated a grade 5 spleen rupture that threatened her life and performed additional facial surgeries to repair three fractured skull bones.
Recovery Outlook and Background
McVoy remains hospitalized and is currently in recovery. Her mother, Ann McVoy, confirmed all surgeries were completed without serious complications but emphasized the long healing process ahead. The teenager expressed uncertainty about her return to school, graduation, and college plans in the months to come.
McVoy is a senior at Saint Andrew’s School on an academic scholarship and a varsity basketball player. In November, the school recognized her participation in a “Solutions in Medicine” summer course that inspired her interest in medicine and law.
