Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party, is preparing to call on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to take stronger action to protect energy price cap customers from steep bill increases expected this summer. Polanski’s remarks, set for delivery at the New Economics Foundation, come amid rising concerns over household energy costs once the current price cap ends in June.
Polanski Proposes Financial Measures Against Energy Price Shocks
Polanski is expected to urge the government to allocate £8.4 billion to address anticipated energy bill rises after the price cap expires at the end of June. He will call for tightening the windfall tax on energy companies to recover any “excess profiteering” linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Additionally, Polanski plans to press Chancellor Rachel Reeves to increase taxes on high earners and align capital gains tax rates with those on income as immediate revenue-raising measures.
Criticism of Government’s Current Support Package
Last Monday, Starmer announced a £53 million support package targeting the most vulnerable households affected by the sharp surge in heating oil prices. However, the government has indicated it will only intervene “if necessary” for those protected by the existing energy price cap that runs from April through June. Polanski will argue this support is insufficient and emphasize that greater reliance on clean energy could have better shielded consumers from recent price shocks.
Polanski’s Economic Vision and Influences
Since assuming Green Party leadership in September 2025, Polanski has consulted economists including Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz and wealth tax expert Gabriel Zucman to refine the party’s fiscal policies. His broader economic critique suggests Britain has shifted from manufacturing essentials to prioritizing wealth accumulation for asset owners. His policy agenda includes nationalizing water companies, implementing rent controls, and legalizing all drugs, signaling a push for systemic economic reforms.
