Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an upbeat speech to the UK Parliament, emphasizing Ukraine’s drone technology and its expanding role in regional security beyond Ukraine. Speaking to MPs and peers, Zelenskyy showcased Ukrainian interceptor drones as cost-effective tools for missile defense, including protecting British RAF bases in Cyprus.
During his visit, several Ukrainian drones were displayed outside Parliament, underscoring the advanced capabilities Ukraine has developed since Russia’s invasion. Zelenskyy explained that these drones, which can intercept Iranian-built missiles used by Russia for approximately $10,000 per unit, are part of Ukraine’s broader security contribution.
Zelenskyy also disclosed that Ukraine has deployed teams of around 200 anti-drone experts to Middle Eastern countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and is preparing to send personnel to Kuwait. He linked Ukraine’s defense efforts with challenges faced by Western allies, particularly concerning threats linked to Iran.
The speech marked Zelenskyy’s third address to the UK Parliament since Russia’s invasion began four years ago. Unlike earlier appearances where he wore combat fatigues, he appeared in formal attire and adopted a more diplomatic tone, framing Ukraine’s military technology as vital for allied defense efforts beyond the immediate conflict zone.
Zelenskyy concluded by referencing his use of an iPad during the speech, which he said he gifted to King Charles, adding a moment of levity to a session focused largely on security cooperation and international support.
