Florida Officers Use Paddleboards to Capture Suspect in River Escape

Volusia County and Daytona Beach Shores police officers apprehended Chase Cruz, 28, after he fled on foot and jumped into the Halifax River during questioning on March 16, 2026. Cruz was charged with loitering and prowling, as well as resisting arrest.

Suspect Flees into Halifax River During Traffic Stop

According to officials, Cruz attempted to escape while deputies were informing him of his rights on land in Volusia County, Florida. Bodycam footage released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shows Cruz running from officers before jumping into the river to evade arrest.

Deputies immediately pursued Cruz into the water, equipped with paddleboards to aid in the river chase. The video captures two officers paddling swiftly to catch up with him as he floated in the river wearing a blue hoodie.

Officers Restrain and Arrest Cruz After Water Pursuit

One officer entered the water to secure a flotation device around Cruz. Together, officers brought him onto a paddleboard before returning to shore where he was taken into custody without further incident. Authorities charged him with loitering and prowling, along with resisting arrest.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has not issued additional comments regarding the arrest. Video of the pursuit was posted on the department’s official Facebook page.
