ICE Arrests Illegal Immigrant in Hit-and-Run Death of Texas Deputy

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Dennis Arguello-Acosta, an illegal immigrant, in connection with the hit-and-run death of Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Deputy Kenneth Lewis. The arrest was announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on March 18, 2026.

Details of the Incident and Arrest

Deputy Kenneth Lewis, 51, was struck by a vehicle on February 21, 2026, while assisting drivers involved in a separate two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10. At the time, Lewis was off-duty but in uniform. He died two days later from injuries sustained in the collision. Arguello-Acosta was identified as the driver who hit Lewis and fled the scene.

Authorities arrested Arguello-Acosta at his home following a tip from a member of the public, which was relayed to the FBI and other law enforcement agencies. ICE emphasized the suspect’s illegal status and the department’s commitment to public safety through the arrest.

Official Reactions and Background

Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated that Deputy Lewis served his community honorably and highlighted that Arguello-Acosta should not have been in the country. She added that under current enforcement policies, criminal illegal aliens are not tolerated in the U.S.

Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan praised Deputy Lewis as a “superhero” for prioritizing the safety of others at the time of the incident. Lewis had previously survived a near-fatal incident 12 years ago when he jumped from a bridge to avoid being hit while on duty with the Missouri City Police Department.
