A 61-year-old woman died Wednesday when a cable car cabin detached and fell at the Engelberg ski resort in central Switzerland. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. local time on the Titlis Xpress gondola lift between Trübsee and Stand.
According to a press release from Kanton Nidwalden authorities, the gondola cabin broke free from the cable and plunged down a snow-covered slope in a rugged area. The woman was alone in the cabin and sustained fatal injuries. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.
Investigations involving multiple agencies are underway to determine how the gondola detached. Norbert Patt, CEO of Titlis cable cars, emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation and pledged to provide complete data. Patt noted there was a breeze at the time but did not specify wind strength.
Several schoolchildren attending a nearby ski camp witnessed the accident. A 14-year-old witness described feeling shocked and fearful of using the gondola afterward.
The Titlis Xpress is a key lift connecting two points in the popular ski area. Authorities and the cable car operator are cooperating closely as they examine the technical and environmental factors involved in this rare and fatal event.
