UK MPs Urge Extradition of Andrew Tate from Hong Kong

Senior British MPs have called on the UK government to urgently request the extradition of Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan from Hong Kong to face criminal charges in the UK. The brothers face a total of 21 charges, including rape, actual bodily harm, and human trafficking.

Extradition Request and Legal Status

The UK holds an active extradition warrant for the Tate brothers, who arrived in Hong Kong recently and have been publicly sharing images and videos from the city. Both Andrew and Tristan Tate deny all allegations made against them in the UK and Romania.

Although Romanian authorities have initiated legal proceedings against the brothers, their trial has not begun. Romanian courts have ruled that any extradition to the UK must be deferred until these proceedings conclude, a position acknowledged by UK authorities.

Hong Kong officials noted that extradition could only occur if requested by either the UK or Romania. The UK suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong in 2020 but proposed resuming limited cooperation on a case-by-case basis last year.

Political Calls and Responses

Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp urged Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to issue an immediate extradition request, emphasizing the seriousness of the criminal allegations facing the brothers. Liberal Democrat spokesman Max Wilkinson also called for urgent action to prevent the Tates from evading justice.

Andrew Tate’s lawyer in Romania, Eugen Vidineac, criticized the political demands for extradition, stating they ignore the ongoing legal framework and due process between Romania and the UK. He emphasized that Tate is cooperating fully with ongoing investigations and that judicial timelines must be respected.

Hong Kong lawmaker Joe Chan Cho-kwong explained that law enforcement there requires formal extradition requests from either country via established mechanisms such as Interpol before taking action.

Ongoing Investigations and International Movement

The Tate brothers had a travel ban imposed by Romania, where they are under investigation for charges including human trafficking and organized crime related to sexual exploitation. The ban was lifted in February 2025, after which they relocated from Romania to Florida.

The UK Home Office declined to comment on specific extradition requests due to ongoing investigations but reiterated its commitment to addressing violence against women and girls.
