Barcelona police have ruled the death of Jimmy Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama junior, as accidental. Gracey vanished after a night out during spring break and was found dead in a marina near the Shoko nightclub, where he was last seen.
Discovery and Investigation Details
Gracey was last seen around 3 a.m. at Shoko, a popular waterfront nightclub adjacent to Port Olímpic marina. Surveillance footage reportedly shows him walking alone toward the marina dock before falling into the water. His body was recovered by Catalan police dive teams approximately 500 feet from the nightclub on March 19. Authorities ruled out foul play following an autopsy and investigation.
Search Efforts and Police Actions
The search for Gracey began after his friends realized he had not returned to their Airbnb near Ronda de Sant Pere, about 1.5 miles from the nightclub. Police recovered Gracey’s phone from a third party and have been examining location data and reviewing surveillance videos as part of their inquiry. While details of the phone’s recovery and the individual’s involvement remain unclear, authorities have not linked it directly to the disappearance.
Family Statement and Context
Gracey traveled with friends, including members of the Theta Chi fraternity, on a spring break trip to Barcelona. His family expressed profound grief upon confirmation of his death. “Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend,” the Gracey family said in a statement, mourning the loss.
