Daytona Beach Declares State of Emergency, Imposes Curfew After Spring Break Arrests

Daytona Beach officials declared a state of emergency and enacted a seven-day overnight curfew for minors following several days of disorder during spring break that led to over 130 arrests. The measures address the impacts of unsanctioned beach events and associated public safety strains in the popular Florida destination.

Arrests and Public Safety Challenges During Spring Break

Volusia County law enforcement reported a total of 133 arrests over the weekend linked to spring break activities, including 84 arrests in Daytona Beach and 49 in nearby New Smyrna Beach. The area also experienced five shootings during the timeframe, prompting intensified response efforts by local authorities.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young stated the approximately 222 sworn officers were outnumbered by thousands of college-aged visitors engaging in unauthorized gatherings promoted via social media. Young emphasized that the emergency measures target high-risk behaviors such as underage drinking and drug use to reduce demands on public safety resources.

New Restrictions and Enforcement Measures

In addition to the curfew, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood established special event zones allowing for doubled fines, vehicle impoundments up to 72 hours, and occupancy limits on beaches. Chitwood warned organizers of unsanctioned events that legal and financial actions are being pursued, urging proper permitting for such gatherings.

Sheriff Chitwood clarified that reports of gunfire causing panic among beach crowds were inaccurate, attributing the disturbance instead to the sound of smashed water bottles. Both the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and Daytona Beach Police Department indicated limited capacity to preemptively manage the scale of events promoted on social media.

Official Statements and Ongoing Efforts

Chief Young described the situation as a “guessing game” in anticipating crowd sizes for non-permitted events, noting the challenges in resource allocation despite full deployment of available officers. Authorities continue reviewing enforcement strategies to prevent similar incidents and mitigate the strain on community safety during peak tourist periods.
