University of Alabama Student Jimmy Gracey Found Dead in Barcelona

The body of James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama junior, was recovered Thursday in Barcelona, Spain, following a multi-day search, officials confirmed. Gracey was found near Port Olímpic, close to the waterfront nightclub where he was last seen early Tuesday morning.

Search Effort and Discovery

Authorities conducted an extensive search involving helicopters, boats, dive teams, and motorcycle units to locate Gracey after he disappeared around 3 a.m. He was last seen at the Shoko restaurant and nightclub area in Barcelona. Divers faced limited visibility underwater, sometimes only about 16 inches, which complicated recovery efforts. The Catalan police identified the remains as those of Gracey.

Investigation Details

Gracey had been with friends that night but became separated from them. He did not return to the Airbnb rented with his friends. Police recovered his phone during an unrelated arrest and are analyzing location data as part of the ongoing investigation. The cause of death has not yet been released by authorities.

Family Statement

Gracey’s family expressed heartbreak upon confirmation of his death. They described him as a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and indicated they are struggling to come to terms with their loss.
