Authorities investigating the death of University of Alabama student Jimmy Gracey in Barcelona are treating the case as an accident but have not ruled out the possibility that he was drugged, a law enforcement source told Fox News Digital. Gracey, 20, went missing while on spring break and was found dead near the Port Olímpic marina. His wallet was recovered intact, containing cash, credit cards, and identification.
Investigation Details and Phone Theft
Investigators believe Gracey walked toward the water alone and fell in while possibly under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or both. However, toxicology and autopsy results are pending and expected next Thursday, delaying any official determination of cause of death. Police continue to review surveillance footage from the area.
A man with a prior theft record was arrested after being found in possession of Gracey’s phone. Authorities do not believe the man took the phone directly from Gracey but rather found it on the street. There is no evidence the suspect had contact with Gracey.
Ongoing Hypotheses and Local Crime Context
Authorities are considering several scenarios, including accidental drugging, voluntary drug use, or heavy alcohol consumption leading to disorientation. The area where Gracey was last seen, known for nightlife near the waterfront promenade, has experienced opportunistic crimes, but overall crime in Barcelona has been declining in recent years.
The Catalan regional police, Mossos d’Esquadra, stated they believe Gracey’s death was accidental but have withheld specific details about the circumstances. Gracey had been with friends from his fraternity before staying behind at a nightclub near the marina. He was last seen early on the morning of March 17, 2026, and failed to return to their Airbnb.
