The Islamic Republic of Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia, a key joint U.S.-U.K. military base in the Indian Ocean, marking a significant escalation in Iran’s missile capabilities. The attack, reported on March 20, 2026, indicates that Iran’s missile range now extends approximately 2,500 miles, surpassing previous public claims by Tehran that it lacked such long-range capability.
IDF Confirms Iran Exceeded Missile Range Limits
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir stated that the missile launch demonstrated a range of about 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles), far exceeding the 2,000-kilometer limit Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had acknowledged prior to the February 28 Operation Epic Fury. Zamir noted the missiles were not aimed at Israel but put European capitals such as Berlin, Paris, and Rome within threat range. IDF spokesman Nadav Shoshani criticized Iranian officials for previously denying ownership of long-range missiles.
Experts Highlight Strategic Implications of Iran’s Expanded Missile Reach
Jason Brodsky, policy director of United Against Nuclear Iran, said the missile launch validates the Trump administration’s justification for military actions against Iran’s missile program, noting Iran’s refusal to negotiate over missile development even while publicly limiting announced ranges. Brodsky attributed the expanded missile program to increased influence of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s death, as Khamenei had capped missile ranges at 2,000 kilometers during his leadership.
The missiles did not hit the Diego Garcia base; one reportedly failed in flight, and a U.S. warship launched an SM-3 interceptor against the other, though interception success remains unclear. Diego Garcia is a critical U.S. strategic asset hosting bombers and nuclear submarines, underscoring the significance of Iran’s expanded missile threat.
Ilan Berman, vice president of the American Foreign Policy Council, underscored that the launch validates concerns over Iran’s growing strategic programs, which now threaten U.S. allies beyond the Middle East, including parts of Europe. This development aligns with U.S. military operations like Operation Epic Fury, aimed at countering Iran’s missile advancements.
