Live Possum Found Hiding Among Plush Toys at Hobart Airport

A live brushtail possum was discovered hiding among stuffed animals in a gift shop at Hobart Airport in Tasmania, Australia, on Wednesday. The possum was spotted by a shopper and reported to airport staff, who confirmed the animal’s presence.

Retail manager Liam Bloomfield said a staff member initially doubted the report but soon involved airport management. The possum was curled up in a cubby with plush kangaroos, dingoes, and Tasmanian devils, blending in with the toys. Airport personnel safely removed the possum without causing harm.

Hobart Airport posted a photo on Facebook showing the possum nestled among the stuffed animals and confirmed it was relocated outside the terminal area. The space was subsequently cleaned to maintain hygiene standards.

Bloomfield noted the possum’s unexpected visit had captured the attention and affection of airport staff. Plans are underway to commemorate the animal with a photo display and a plaque in the gift shop, once the possum is given a name.

The incident highlights the occasional interaction between wildlife and human spaces in Tasmania, where brushtail possums are common. The airport’s swift and safe response ensured the animal’s wellbeing and minimized disruption to travelers.
