Jewish nonprofit Magen Am is intensifying community security efforts amid an elevated terror threat in the United States. The organization, active in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Phoenix, focuses on protecting Jewish spaces following recent violent incidents and rising threats targeting synagogues.
Magen Am Trains Volunteers for Active Threat Response
Magen Am conducts training sessions where volunteers practice defensive tactics to prepare for potential attacks on Jewish communities. In Phoenix, the group’s local branch, led by Ian Turner, emphasizes proactive measures since the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, which prompted American Jews to enhance security awareness. Volunteers frequently serve as security guards at synagogues and receive training in shooting and defensive response.
Recent Attacks and Rising Threats Heighten Security Concerns
Security concerns increased sharply after two attacks occurred on the same day nearly two weeks ago: an assault at an ROTC classroom at Old Dominion University in Virginia and a truck ramming incident at Temple Israel synagogue in Michigan. The Michigan attack, in which a man armed with a rifle and fireworks rammed a truck into the synagogue, was mitigated by the synagogue’s security team. The FBI is investigating the incident, with the suspect identified as Ayman Muhammed Ghazali, reportedly the brother of a Hezbollah commander recently killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.
Challenges in Preventing Lone Wolf Attacks
Experts warn that lone wolf attackers, who act independently and often without detection, pose the greatest threat to Jewish communities. Counterterrorism analyst Aaron Cohen noted that law enforcement currently has limited capability to identify such individuals before they strike. Magen Am and other Jewish organizations have also reported an increase in online threats, particularly following U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran.
Turner acknowledged the limits of security measures but stressed the importance of continuous preparedness: “Beyond increasing security and staying alert, we’ve done all we can. This is something we prepare for every day.”
