Seattle Man Found Not Guilty by Insanity in 2023 Shooting of Pregnant Woman

Cordell Goosby was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2023 shooting that killed 34-year-old Eina Kwon and her unborn child in Seattle. Goosby was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder for the attack, which also injured Eina Kwon’s husband, Sung Kwon.

Shooting Incident and Charges

The shooting occurred on June 13, 2023, when Eina and Sung Kwon were stopped at a red light around 11:15 a.m. as they drove to their restaurant. Prosecutors said Goosby ran to the driver’s side window of their Tesla and fired multiple shots into the car before fleeing the scene and discarding the weapon. Following the incident, Goosby was apprehended by police and allegedly admitted to the shooting.

Legal and Mental Health Determination

Goosby was prohibited from owning firearms due to a prior criminal record in Illinois and reportedly used a stolen gun during the attack. Both prosecution and defense experts evaluated Goosby and concluded he was legally insane at the time of the shooting. This assessment led the King County court to allow the not guilty by reason of insanity plea.

Next Steps and Commitment

Under the ruling, Goosby admitted to committing the crimes and will be committed to a state psychiatric hospital. His possible future release will require approval from multiple state and judicial authorities overseeing his case. The case remains a tragic event for the victims’ family and the Seattle community.
