Royal Navy Submarine HMS Anson Deployed to Arabian Sea Amid Iran Tensions

The British nuclear-powered submarine HMS Anson has been deployed to the Arabian Sea amid escalating tensions involving Iran, following Iran’s attempted ballistic missile strike on the U.K.-U.S. military base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, according to multiple reports.

HMS Anson’s Strategic Deployment

HMS Anson, an Astute-class submarine equipped with Tomahawk Block IV cruise missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes, traveled approximately 5,500 miles from HMAS Stirling near Perth, Australia, to the northern Arabian Sea in early March. The deployment positions the Royal Navy to respond quickly if the regional conflict escalates. The submarine maintains periodic communications with the U.K.’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in London by surfacing intermittently. HMS Anson is typically based at Faslane in Scotland.

Context of Rising Regional Conflict

The deployment closely followed Iran’s launch of two ballistic missiles targeting Diego Garcia, a key Indian Ocean military base hosting approximately 2,500 U.S. personnel. Neither missile reached its target; one reportedly failed in flight, while the other was intercepted. This missile test raised concerns regarding Iran’s extended missile range, as Diego Garcia is situated about 2,485 miles from Iran.

The U.K. government had authorized the U.S. to use British military bases for defensive operations aimed at degrading Iranian missile capabilities threatening shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while emphasizing a policy to avoid deeper involvement in the regional conflict.

Diplomatic Reactions and Military Coordination

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi conveyed to U.K. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper that Iran views Britain’s support for U.S. defensive operations from British bases as “participation in aggression.” He also criticized the U.K.’s approach as biased and demanded a halt to cooperation with the U.S. The U.K. clarified that while it did not allow use of its bases for initial offensive strikes, it permitted defensive responses to Iranian missile threats.

The U.K. Ministry of Defence reported that Royal Air Force assets, including Typhoon jets, continue defensive operations in the region and have helped counter Iranian drone threats while coordinating closely with allied forces.
