A repeat offender with nearly 100 prior arrests was taken into custody following a high-speed chase and a retail theft spree spanning multiple counties in Washington state, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies pursued the suspect’s pickup truck, which reached speeds over 100 miles per hour on Interstate 5 near Olympia before the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
High-Speed Pursuit Endangers Public Safety
Deputies identified the suspect and an accomplice after they were accused of stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise from several stores, including instances where stolen bags from one retailer were used to carry items from another. When officers attempted to halt the truck, the driver sped off, prompting a pursuit that reached triple-digit speeds. The chase continued onto city streets in Olympia and Lacey, with the suspect running red lights at near 80 mph, forcing deputies to call off pursuit efforts for public safety.
Suspects Apprehended After Vehicle Abandoned
The truck was later found abandoned near College Street. Both suspects fled on foot toward a neighborhood near an elementary school, triggering a search involving K9 units. Deputies took the suspects into custody at gunpoint after ordering them to comply. Inside the vehicle, police found thousands of dollars worth of stolen goods, as well as methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl. A custom-made bong embedded in the dashboard was discovered, which deputies say allowed drug use while driving.
Charges and Investigation Underway
The driver, a four-time convicted felon with 97 previous arrests, faces charges including DUI, eluding police, and drug possession. Authorities secured a warrant for a blood test as part of the DUI investigation. Additional organized retail theft charges are expected in Lewis County. The accomplice was handed over to another law enforcement agency for a separate theft case.
Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders commented on the arrest, highlighting the suspect’s extensive criminal history and the deputies’ role in apprehending him. “Tonight, he is back in jail for the 98th time on charges of DUI, eluding, and possession of narcotics,” Sanders said.
