Spanish Police Await Toxicology Report in Alabama Student’s Death

Spanish authorities investigating the death of James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student who died in Barcelona during spring break, are not pursuing criminal charges as they await toxicology results following a preliminary autopsy.

Gracey disappeared after leaving the Shoko nightclub early on March 17. His body was recovered two days later from a marina about 500 feet from the club. The preliminary autopsy indicated the death was likely accidental, with no signs of injuries prior to his disappearance, according to the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police.

Preliminary Findings and Investigation Status

The Catalan High Court confirmed no charges are currently being filed related to Gracey’s death. Officials continue to investigate pending the final toxicology report, which could take up to three weeks. Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected at this stage.

Police recovered Gracey’s wallet intact with cash and credit cards, reducing the likelihood of robbery or targeted harm. Video footage reportedly shows Gracey walking alone near the Port Olímpic dock before falling into the water, though police have declined to comment on details from the media.

Background and Memorial

Gracey was visiting Barcelona with members of the University of Alabama’s Theta Chi fraternity. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross. After his friends left the club around 3 a.m., Gracey remained behind and was last observed speaking with an American woman.

He was reported missing the next morning when he failed to return to the group’s Airbnb. His cellphone was later recovered after authorities arrested an individual for illegal possession, but that person has not been linked to Gracey’s death.

A memorial mass for Gracey was held on March 23 at the Church of the Holy Family in Chicago, his hometown.
