The White House installed a 13-foot, one-ton replica statue of Christopher Columbus on its grounds as part of the Trump administration’s America250 celebrations marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. The statue was unveiled on Sunday near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Statue Replaced After Baltimore Removal
The replica statue, rebuilt partially from pieces salvaged after rioters tore down and dumped the original into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in 2020, replaces the monument Baltimore officials declined to restore in the city’s Little Italy neighborhood. The project was led by the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations (COPOMIAO), a national coalition advocating for Italian American communities.
Trump Praises Columbus and Italian American Heritage
President Donald Trump sent a letter thanking COPOMIAO President Basil M. Russo and praised Columbus as “the original American hero” and a pivotal figure in Western civilization. Trump highlighted Columbus’s 1492 voyage as foundational to American history and Western culture.
Trump described the statue as a symbol of “courage, adventure,” and the pride of Italian Americans, whose history he said has been closely connected to Columbus’s legacy. COPOMIAO noted that Columbus monuments have served as cultural symbols for over 18 million Italian Americans and arose partly in response to historic prejudice against Italian immigrants.
Administration’s Commitment to Preserving Columbus Legacy
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle stated the administration intends to continue honoring Columbus’s legacy. Ingle quoted Trump asserting that Columbus is recognized as a hero at the White House and will be honored for future generations.
The statue installation contrasts with the removal and destruction of various monuments during nationwide protests in 2020, reflecting ongoing debates about historical representation in public spaces.
