An explosion and fire occurred Monday at Valero’s Port Arthur oil refinery in Texas, leading local officials to issue a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby residents.
Incident and Immediate Response
The fire broke out at the Port Arthur facility, located about 90 miles east of Houston, which processes approximately 435,000 barrels of oil daily. Valero confirmed the incident involved a fire in one of the refinery units and stated that all employees, including about 770 staff members on site, were accounted for with no injuries reported. Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte Moses emphasized that emergency teams are actively working to extinguish the fire.
Shelter-in-Place Advisory and Local Impact
The city of Port Arthur, home to roughly 56,000 residents, advised those in specific areas—including Stillwell Boulevard West, south of Highway 73, Sabine Pass, and Pleasure Island—to remain indoors until authorities give the all-clear. Jefferson County officials closed State Highways 82 and 87 as a precautionary measure. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality deployed emergency responders with air monitoring equipment to oversee the situation.
Possible Cause and Safety Measures
Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens indicated that an industrial heater might have caused the explosion. Valero’s emergency response team is coordinating closely with local agencies to manage the incident, with safety of employees and the local population being the top priority.
