Senate Confirms Colin McDonald as DOJ National Fraud Enforcement Chief

The Senate confirmed Colin McDonald by a 52-47 vote to serve as the first assistant attorney general for the Department of Justice’s National Fraud Enforcement Division, a new office created to address widespread abuse of taxpayer-funded programs.

New DOJ Division Targets Complex Fraud Schemes

The National Fraud Enforcement Division was established under the Trump administration to centralize and expand federal efforts in investigating and prosecuting large-scale fraud related to public assistance programs. The division will build on enforcement work in states like Minnesota, where significant fraud involving federal funds has recently been uncovered.

During his confirmation hearing, McDonald highlighted Minnesota’s fraud investigations as “pivotal” in exposing persistent scams and said the division will aim to replicate those enforcement models nationwide. The division will coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies to pursue fraud of all sizes.

Minnesota Daycare Fraud Investigation Raises National Focus

The confirmation coincides with continued federal investigations into a Minnesota childcare fraud scandal involving millions of federal taxpayer dollars. A state audit found Minnesota officials failed to adequately investigate fraud allegations over several years, despite having authority to act.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer raised concerns that whistleblowers had warned state leaders about the fraud for years without sufficient response. The Minnesota case has contributed to the federal government’s push for stricter anti-fraud measures.

Support from DOJ Leadership and Lawmakers

Attorney General Pam Bondi praised McDonald as an experienced prosecutor committed to combating fraud nationwide. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche called him “one of the most effective attorneys” he has worked with. Vice President JD Vance also noted McDonald’s strong prosecutorial record.

McDonald currently serves as an associate deputy attorney general and has been involved in significant enforcement initiatives. The Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Chuck Grassley, held McDonald’s confirmation hearing in February 2026.
