DOJ Settles with Michael Flynn for $1.2 Million Over Russia Probe Lawsuit

The Department of Justice reached a $1.2 million settlement with Michael Flynn, former national security advisor to President Donald Trump, resolving Flynn’s 2023 lawsuit alleging wrongful prosecution related to the Russia investigation. The agreement was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida and will dismiss Flynn’s case with prejudice, preventing refiling.

Background of Legal Dispute

Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, pleaded guilty in December 2017 to making false statements to the FBI about his communications with Russia’s ambassador during the Mueller investigation into Russian election interference. His discussions with the diplomat involved topics such as U.S. sanctions on Russia and a United Nations Security Council resolution concerning Israel. Flynn later sought to withdraw his guilty plea, accusing federal prosecutors of misconduct.

Despite being pardoned by President Trump in late 2020, Flynn pursued a lawsuit claiming that FBI officials with “virulently anti-Trump” bias maliciously prosecuted him, costing him substantial business and financial opportunities. Initially, the DOJ moved to dismiss Flynn’s complaint, but the department reversed course under Attorney General Pam Bondi.

DOJ Statement and Case Closure

The DOJ described the settlement as an “important step in redressing” a “historic injustice” and emphasized its commitment to preventing weaponization of the federal government in future investigations. According to court documents, each side will bear its own legal costs, and the court will relinquish jurisdiction over the settlement after Flynn confirms receipt of funds.

The resolution concludes a lengthy legal saga tied to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe that also implicated other Trump campaign associates but did not establish a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and Russia. Flynn’s case had been a focal point of controversy over the handling of the Russia investigation.
