The Trump administration has submitted new criminal referrals to the Department of Justice (DOJ) alleging insurance fraud involving New York Attorney General Letitia James. These referrals, made by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, have been sent to U.S. attorney offices in Florida and reportedly Illinois for review.
One referral alleges James provided false information on a homeowners insurance application to Universal Property Insurance, a Fort Lauderdale-based company. According to Pulte, social media posts from attorney Mike Davis suggest James stated her Florida property would be unoccupied five months a year, while it was actually occupied year-round by her niece. This discrepancy forms the basis of the potential insurance fraud claim.
The referral was transmitted to Jason Quinones, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, who will decide whether to pursue prosecution and seek a grand jury indictment. A DOJ spokesperson confirmed the referrals were received by the relevant U.S. attorney offices.
This development follows the dismissal of earlier bank fraud charges against James by a Clinton-appointed judge last year and a subsequent refusal of a Virginia grand jury to re-indict her. Those indictments, which also targeted former FBI Director James Comey, were invalidated due to procedural issues concerning the prosecuting U.S. attorney’s qualifications.
Fox News has reached out to James’ office and her legal team for comment.
