UK Forces Authorized to Board Russian Shadow Fleet in Territorial Waters

British armed forces have been granted authority to board Russian shadow fleet vessels sailing through UK waters in an effort to disrupt financial support for Russia’s war in Ukraine. This move aims to strengthen pressure on Vladimir Putin as the conflict enters its fifth year.

The Royal Navy has recently supported allied forces in monitoring shadow fleet ships operating in European and Mediterranean waters. Shadow fleets consist of sanctioned and covert vessels used to evade international restrictions and continue financing Russia’s military operations.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that the operation is designed not only to protect UK sovereignty but also to cut off profits fueling Putin’s campaign in Ukraine. He stated that the government seeks to prevent Russia from benefiting from rising global oil prices and vowed continued support for Ukraine.

The announcement coincides with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s attendance at the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) summit in Helsinki. The JEF, led by the UK and composed of 10 northern European nations, aims to counter Russian military incursions. Finland, Sweden, and Estonia have recently conducted operations targeting shadow fleet vessels in the Baltic Sea. The UK also assisted US forces in boarding the sanctioned Russian-linked oil tanker Bella 1 in the Atlantic earlier this year.

This enhanced boarding authority reflects ongoing international efforts to disrupt Russia’s shadow fleet operations and reduce its access to illicit revenue streams.
