UK police arrested two men on Wednesday in connection with an antisemitic arson attack targeting four ambulances in the Golders Green area of north London. The Metropolitan Police identified the suspects as 45 and 47 years old, detained at addresses in northwest and central London on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Their properties are currently being searched as part of the ongoing investigation.
Details of the Arson Attack and Investigation
The incident occurred on March 23, when four ambulances operated by Hatzola, a volunteer Jewish community ambulance service, were deliberately set on fire. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as “horrifying” and antisemitic. Police counterterrorism units, led by Head of Counterterrorism Policing London Commander Helen Flanagan, are leading the investigation and noted that CCTV footage indicates at least three individuals may have been involved.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams confirmed awareness of an online claim of responsibility by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyya, a group reportedly linked to Iran and previously associated with attacks on Jewish sites in Belgium and the Netherlands. However, police emphasize that verifying this claim remains a priority, and motive has not been conclusively established.
Security Measures and Community Response
In response to community concerns, police have implemented an enhanced security plan across vulnerable areas in London, including deploying specialist officers and armed patrols. These measures are precautionary and not tied to any specific threat. The Metropolitan Police continue to seek additional suspects and urge the public to assist with information as the investigation progresses.
