A Utah woman, Shannon Tufuga, was charged Monday with second-degree felonies for allegedly kidnapping an 11-year-old boy accused of bullying her son. The charges include child kidnapping and aggravated child abuse.
According to charging documents filed in Utah County, Tufuga forcibly took the boy into her car without his parents’ knowledge while he was riding his bike around the neighborhood in Provo. She then drove him to her home and allegedly compelled him to apologize to her son for bullying.
The documents state that after the apology, Tufuga threatened to have her husband assault the boy and told him he was fortunate she had not run over his bike. She eventually returned the child home.
The incident reportedly caused the boy significant emotional distress, leading to ongoing high anxiety and major changes in his daily routines.
Tufuga’s charges were reduced from first-degree felonies after the Utah County Attorney’s Office concluded that a lesser charge would serve the interests of justice. Her initial court hearing is set for April 30.
This case highlights legal action involving an adult’s response to alleged bullying through alleged abduction and threats rather than legal channels.
