DOJ Sues Harvard Over Alleged Antisemitism and Federal Fund Misuse

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a 44-page lawsuit against Harvard University accusing the institution of failing to protect Jewish students and enabling a culture of antisemitism. The suit seeks to recover billions in federal funding, citing Harvard’s alleged “deliberate indifference” to antisemitic hostility following the October 7 attacks.

Federal Allegations and University Response

The lawsuit, initiated under the previous Trump administration, claims Harvard allowed discrimination and harassment against Jewish and Israeli students to occur on campus without adequate intervention. A White House spokesperson underscored that Harvard “has failed to protect its Jewish students from harassment and has allowed discrimination to wreak havoc on its campus.” In response, Harvard has condemned the lawsuit as a federal attempt to exert control over the university.

Context of Antisemitism Lawsuits and Related Cases

The Harvard case follows other recent legal actions addressing antisemitism in higher education. Notably, the University of California, Berkeley agreed to a $1 million settlement and comprehensive policy reforms, including adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism and explicit protections for Jewish and Israeli students.

Elsewhere, accusations of antisemitic behavior have emerged, such as a civil lawsuit against NFL player Puka Nacua. He faces allegations of assault and antisemitic remarks during a New Year’s Eve incident in Century City, which his attorney has denied, calling the claims a “shakedown.”

Security Concerns and Broader Political Implications

Experts also warn that antisemitic incidents like a recent arson attack in London on Jewish community ambulances, attributed to an Iran-linked group, indicate escalating threats tied to foreign-backed extremism. This broader pattern of antisemitic violence and discrimination places additional scrutiny on institutional responses in the U.S., including campuses like Harvard.
