A majority of Americans oppose ongoing U.S. military strikes on Iran, according to multiple recent national polls, highlighting a sharp partisan divide in public opinion. A Fox News poll conducted from March 20 to 23 found that 58% of voters oppose the military action while 42% support it, a shift from an earlier survey in late February that showed the public evenly split.
Partisan Divide Shapes Support for Military Actions
The Fox News poll revealed that support among Republicans remains strong, with 77% backing the strikes compared to just 12% of Democrats and 28% of independents. Within the GOP, support ranged from 90% among MAGA supporters to 52% among non-MAGA Republicans. Similar partisan gaps appeared in other polls, such as a Quinnipiac University survey where 86% of Republicans supported the strikes versus only 5% of Democrats.
Widespread Disapproval of Conflict and Leadership Handling
Additional polls reflect a broader opposition to the conflict. A Quinnipiac poll found 54% of voters opposed the military actions, while a Reuters/Ipsos survey showed only 35% in support. An AP/NORC poll reported that 60% of respondents believe the military response has gone too far, with just over a quarter seeing it as appropriate. Pew Research Center data indicated that 61% disapprove of President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, with 37% approving.
The military campaign by the U.S. and Israel has resulted in the deaths of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top officials, as well as significant damage to Iran’s military capabilities. In retaliation, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks on Israel and neighboring states, targeting energy infrastructure and disrupting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for around 20% of the world’s oil supply.
President Trump has stated that Iran is seeking a deal to end the fighting, while many Democratic leaders have criticized his approach. The ongoing conflict continues to affect global fuel prices and regional stability.
