Pennsylvania Democrats Criticize Fetterman Over Mullin Confirmation Vote

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman is facing intensified criticism from fellow Democrats after he voted to confirm Markwayne Mullin, a Republican, as Secretary of Homeland Security. The backlash highlights growing intra-party tensions as Fetterman breaks with some progressive priorities.

Democrats Call for Fetterman to Step Down

Rep. Brendan Boyle of Northeast Philadelphia demanded Fetterman resign over his support for Mullin’s confirmation. Boyle referred to Fetterman as “Trump’s favorite Democrat” and said, “He needs to go.” Rep. Pat Ryan, a moderate Democrat from New York who opposed Mullin’s nomination, also criticized Fetterman for enabling Mullin’s confirmation, stating that Pennsylvanians deserve a senator who “actually fights for them.”

Intraparty Friction Reflects Fetterman’s Shift

Other Democrats have expressed frustration with Fetterman’s recent positions. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan of Chester County indicated she finds it easier to work with Republican Senator David McCormick than with Fetterman. Houlahan made this comment while opposing GOP election reform legislation that includes voter ID provisions, a stance Fetterman has complicated by supporting voter ID measures.

Once a leading progressive figure aligned with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Fetterman has diverged on issues such as Israel support and voter ID, drawing ire from his former political base. He defended his Mullin vote, emphasizing the need for leadership and operational reopening of the Department of Homeland Security, describing Mullin as a colleague with whom he intends to maintain a “strong committed, constructive working relationship.”
