Rex Heuermann Expected to Plead Guilty in Gilgo Beach Murders

Rex Heuermann, the accused Gilgo Beach serial killer, is expected to plead guilty to multiple murders in New York, according to sources cited by FOX 5 and the New York Post. Heuermann faces charges in connection with seven killings spanning from 1993 to 2010, with a plea deal reportedly under negotiation between his defense attorney, Michael J. Brown, and Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. The plea hearing is scheduled for April 8.

Charges and Investigation Timeline

Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect from Massapequa Park, Long Island, was indicted for seven murders involving women found near Gilgo Beach, about 45 miles east of New York City. Initial murder charges were filed for three victims—Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello—whose remains were discovered in 2010 during the investigation of another missing woman, Shannan Gilbert. Additional charges were added later for the 2003 murder of Jessica Taylor, the 1993 killing of Sandra Costilla, the 2007 slaying of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and the 2019 murder of Valerie Mack.

Evidence and Court Proceedings

Heuermann’s defense unsuccessfully sought to exclude DNA evidence before the planned plea. Prosecutors have characterized the crimes as involving torture, mutilation, and dismemberment. The victims shared physical traits described as petite—many around 5 feet tall and roughly 100 pounds—contrasting with Heuermann’s much larger stature. The investigation began after the 2010 disappearance and death of Shannan Gilbert, who made a 911 call before vanishing. Police discovered 10 other bodies along Ocean Parkway before finding Gilbert’s remains, which are believed to indicate an accidental death.

Heuermann faces the possibility of life imprisonment without parole if convicted.
