Rubio Presses G7 Allies for Stronger Stance on Iran at France Meeting

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in France on March 26 to attend the G7 foreign ministers meeting, where he is urging allied nations to adopt a firmer approach toward Iran amid ongoing conflict. Rubio emphasized the need for increased support from G7 members in countering Iranian threats, particularly in securing key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Rubio’s Message Highlights U.S. Demand for Greater Allied Engagement

In the lead-up to the summit, Rubio stated that his priority is representing American interests, signaling a more assertive U.S. stance compared to other G7 countries. He criticized several allies, including France, Germany, and Japan, for their cautious responses and reluctance to participate in offensive operations unlike the U.S. and Israel, which have taken direct military actions.

“The Strait of Hormuz could be open tomorrow if Iran stops threatening global shipping,” Rubio said, calling the obstruction “an outrage and a violation of international law.” He lamented the lack of NATO and European commitment, comparing the Iran conflict to Ukraine where Western involvement has been stronger despite initial resistance from some leaders.

European Officials Advocate for Diplomacy and Conflict De-escalation

Contrasting Rubio’s position, the European Commission’s Vice President Kaja Kallas urged for a diplomatic resolution, warning against escalating the war due to its global consequences. France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot indicated that the G7 talks would revisit previously agreed positions focused on condemning Iran’s behavior while addressing maritime security collectively.

U.S. officials conveyed that Rubio intends to leverage the meeting to advance broader U.S. interests, including burden sharing among allies in conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as ensuring freedom of navigation in strategic waterways beyond the Strait of Hormuz.
