Sen. Cruz Blames Democrats for Prolonged DHS Funding Shutdown

Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, criticized Senate Democrats on March 27 for prolonging the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding lapse, which has exceeded 40 days. Cruz accused Democrats of blocking efforts to end the shutdown by moving funding conditions, particularly regarding immigration enforcement policies tied to President Donald Trump’s agenda.

The funding dispute originated when Democrats conditioned DHS support on ten operational reforms for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including a mask ban for agents, stricter warrant requirements, and visible identification mandates. Following recent violent incidents involving immigration agents, Democrats argue these reforms are necessary for public safety. Republicans oppose the conditions, stating they would hinder Trump’s immigration enforcement strategy.

Cruz contended that Democrats’ refusal to compromise puts Americans at risk, citing four recent terror attacks linked to radical Islamic terrorists over the past two weeks. He highlighted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s public statements promising to accept funding excluding ICE, which Cruz claims Democrats later rejected, choosing to maintain the shutdown.

Republicans said they have presented what they consider a “final offer” to Democrats, but negotiations remain stalled. Cruz reaffirmed his position that Democrats are prioritizing their “radical open-border base” over national security. The shutdown’s continuation has also disrupted agency operations and raised concerns amid increasing security threats.
