Former Pima County Deputy Arrested and Fired for Kidnapping Charge

The Tucson Police Department arrested Travis Reynolds, a former Pima County Sheriff’s deputy, and charged him with one count of kidnapping related to alleged misconduct while on duty. Reynolds, 22, was taken into custody and subsequently fired by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which had been involved in investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.

According to an interim complaint, Reynolds was transporting a female detainee to the Pima County Jail when he made inappropriate remarks and shared a vape pen with her. The complaint alleges he suggested they visit a hotel to have sex, showed sexually explicit videos to the handcuffed woman, and delayed processing her while other officers handled detainees. The woman reported feeling intimidated due to Reynolds’s law enforcement status and indicated the behavior may have occurred previously.

Prosecutors described the allegations as “very, very concerning” because of the power imbalance. They noted the alleged victim is fearful of Reynolds and worried about retaliation. Surveillance video from the jail reportedly corroborates parts of her account. Reynolds told investigators he “may or may not” have shown explicit material or discussed sex with the detainee.

A judge set Reynolds’ bond at $200,000 and ordered no contact with the alleged victim and a weapons prohibition. Reynolds, whose defense attorney stated he has no prior criminal history, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 6.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Reynolds’ termination following notification of the arrest but declined to provide details on his employment history or any prior complaints. Department officials also did not comment on whether Reynolds had any involvement in the investigation of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance before his firing. The Tucson Police Department described the kidnapping investigation as active and ongoing.
