IRS Allows Taxpayers to Track Refunds Online Ahead of Filing Deadline

The IRS offers a “Where’s My Refund?” online tool that lets taxpayers monitor their federal tax refund status as the April tax filing deadline nears. Nearly 70 million taxpayers had filed by mid-March, most expecting refunds within about three weeks of e-filing.

Tracking Refund Status via IRS Tool

Taxpayers using the IRS tool can confirm if their return has been received, whether their refund has been approved, and if the payment has been sent via direct deposit. To access the tool, users must enter their Social Security number or taxpayer identification number, filing status, tax year, and the exact refund amount from their return.

E-filed returns typically appear in the tracker within 24 hours, while returns from previous years show after three days. Paper returns take up to four weeks before status is available. The IRS advises that if a refund is not credited by a specified date, taxpayers should check with their banks.

Refund Timing and Processing Considerations

E-filed refunds generally arrive in about three weeks, whereas mailed paper returns may take six weeks or more from IRS receipt. The IRS encourages taxpayers to use direct deposit to receive refunds faster, as paper checks are being phased out but remain available in limited cases.

Some refunds take longer due to additional reviews. Returns claiming the earned income tax credit are delayed by law until mid-February, and returns with complex child tax credit claims require extra processing. Errors like missing signatures or math mistakes can cause further delays.

Any IRS adjustments to refunds after review will be communicated by mail.

Amended Returns and Additional Resources

Taxpayers filing amended returns can track their status using the IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool starting three weeks after submission. These returns typically take up to 16 weeks for processing.

The IRS also provides refund status updates through its mobile app and automated phone hotlines to assist taxpayers in checking their refund progress.
