Trump Repeatedly Criticizes Starmer Over UK Stance in Iran War

Former President Donald Trump has publicly criticized UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer multiple times over the British government’s position on the Iran war and related military cooperation, while Starmer has affirmed he will not yield to pressure.

Trump’s Criticisms Focus on Military and Sovereignty Issues

Since January, Trump has attacked Starmer at least nine times, mostly via social media and media interviews. His criticisms have centered on the UK’s decision to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago, home to the Diego Garcia military base, to Mauritius. Trump warned that the UK’s deal was an “act of great stupidity” and a “total weakness” because the base could be vital for US military operations against Iran.

Trump also criticized the UK for initially denying US permission to launch strikes from Diego Garcia and the RAF Fairford airfield in Gloucestershire. He described Starmer as “not Winston Churchill” and expressed disappointment over what he called a slow or insufficient British response to the conflict.

Starmer’s Response: Maintaining Independence on Iran War Policy

Prime Minister Starmer told Sky News he refuses to be pressured into deeper UK involvement in the Iran war. He emphasized that he will not “buckle under pressure” or “get dragged into the war” despite Trump’s repeated public challenges. Starmer has indicated a desire for a good relationship with the US president but insists on standing firm on the UK’s principles and decisions in this conflict.

Trump’s Recurring Themes and Latest Remarks

Throughout March, Trump repeated themes including the allegedly late UK response to the Iran conflict, the offer to send Royal Navy aircraft carriers—which the UK government denies—and disparaged the carriers as “toys” compared to US vessels. He reiterated his view that the UK’s stance on Diego Garcia was a strategic error and criticized the Chagos agreement as reflecting a “liberal” mindset.
