Trump unveils plans for Miami skyscraper presidential library featuring gold…

Former President Donald Trump on Monday unveiled plans for a presidential library skyscraper near downtown Miami’s historic Freedom Tower. The designs, shared in a video on social media, depict a waterfront skyscraper up to 47 stories tall, featuring Trump’s name prominently and architectural elements reminiscent of his existing commercial real estate developments.

The project, designed by Florida-based Bermello Ajamil & Partners, includes a sleek tower topped with a red, white, and blue spire, echoing landmarks such as New York’s One World Trade Center. Notable features shown in the plans are a gold escalator similar to the one in Trump Tower New York, a large gold statue of Trump in a defiant pose linked to his 2024 assassination attempt, and replicas of the Oval Office as well as a planned White House ballroom that has yet to be built.

The display also reportedly incorporates the presidential Boeing 747 gifted to Trump by Qatar, along with imagery highlighting key moments from Trump’s political career, including his 2016 presidential campaign announcement.

Trump’s son Eric Trump described the project as a “lasting testament” to the former president, emphasizing the personal involvement of The Trump Organization in its development.

Controversy over funding and design

The library plans have drawn criticism for their emphasis on grandeur and symbolism rather than educational content, with the absence of visible bookshelves or traditional archival materials noted by observers. California Governor Gavin Newsom compared the library’s gold statue to statues commonly found in authoritarian regimes.

Meanwhile, congressional Democrats are investigating the library’s financing after media companies that settled lawsuits with Trump around the 2024 election transferred at least $63 million into a related fund that was dissolved last year. Lawmakers have expressed concerns about the transparency and ultimate use of that money, as presidential library nonprofits are not required to disclose donors.

Location and symbolic elements

The site for the library is planned adjacent to Miami’s Freedom Tower, a historic landmark. The height of the building, proposed at 47 stories, symbolizes Trump’s status as the 47th president of the United States.

Why it matters

The project is part of broader efforts to memorialize Donald Trump’s political legacy and brand, coinciding with other initiatives such as Florida’s recent renaming of Palm Beach International Airport in his honor. The fundraising scrutiny highlights ongoing congressional concerns about financial practices linked to Trump’s post-presidency endeavors.

The Independent has reached out to The Trump Organization and Bermello Ajamil & Partners for comment on the plans and funding.
