Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Scheduled for House Armed Services Committee…

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is tentatively scheduled to testify publicly under oath before the House Armed Services Committee on April 29, marking his first such appearance since the start of U.S. military operations linked to the Iran conflict. The hearing, which may be rescheduled, will focus on the committee’s routine oversight of the Defense Department and its annual budget.

The forthcoming testimony comes amid growing bipartisan pressure for greater transparency about the administration’s handling of the conflict, which escalated following strikes initiated on February 28 under the previous Trump administration. Lawmakers have expressed frustration over limited information, especially after a classified briefing by Pentagon officials on March 26 left members with unanswered questions about the war’s strategy and future plans.

Rep. Mike Rogers, chair of the Armed Services Committee, criticized officials for being “very constrained” and “tight-lipped” during the briefing, stating that lawmakers “deserve more answers than we’re given.” Rogers emphasized the lack of clarity regarding tactical planning and potential troop movements. Rep. Adam Smith, the committee’s top Democrat, echoed concerns about the absence of a defined path toward achieving U.S. objectives in Iran, noting the briefing provided no “specific answers” about troop deployments.

Other members, including Democratic Rep. Jason Crow, highlighted the importance of safeguarding the approximately 50,000 U.S. troops in the region, describing the situation as “very volatile” with many unresolved questions about force protection strategies.

In response to the growing demand for information, all committee Democrats sent a letter calling for an immediate public hearing with Pentagon officials, citing “lack of transparency” and concerns about shifting war objectives, potential costs, and the possibility of deploying ground forces.

Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden reiterated his opposition to using ground troops while supporting the provision of necessary resources for military operations in the area. House Speaker Mike Johnson downplayed complaints regarding information sharing and stated he is in continuous contact with top administration officials, pledging to assist Rep. Rogers in obtaining additional intelligence.

Why it matters

This testimony will be crucial as Congress seeks to hold the Defense Department accountable for its management of a conflict that has significant geopolitical and economic consequences. Uncertainty about the U.S. strategy in Iran has contributed to market instability, including a rise in U.S. gas prices above $4 a gallon, the highest level in nearly four years. Lawmakers’ demand for transparency reflects concerns over potential military escalation, troop safety, budget implications, and the long-term direction of the conflict.
