King Charles III to Visit U.S. for State Visit in Late April

King Charles III is scheduled to undertake a state visit to the United States from April 27 to April 30, Buckingham Palace and U.S. President Donald Trump announced on March 31, 2026.

The visit will commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence and celebrate the historic and contemporary relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, according to Buckingham Palace.

President Trump confirmed the visit on his social media platform, Truth Social, noting that the itinerary includes a state dinner at the White House on the evening of April 28. First Lady Melania Trump is also expected to participate in hosting the royal couple during their visit.

This will mark King Charles III’s first official state visit to the U.S. since ascending to the throne, although he had previously visited the country 19 times as Prince of Wales. His late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, conducted four state visits to the U.S. between 1957 and 2007.

Charles’s visit arrives amid a complex geopolitical context, particularly regarding U.S.-U.K. relations. President Trump has publicly criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s hesitance to join a prospective joint U.S.-Israeli military action against Iran. The U.K. currently permits use of its bases for defensive operations related to the conflict.

The visit also follows recent controversies involving the British royal family, notably the arrest of Charles’s younger brother, former Prince Andrew, on charges related to alleged misconduct in public office stemming from documents connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. As a result, King Charles III stripped Andrew of his royal titles.

Additionally, Peter Mandelson, a former U.K. ambassador to Washington, was arrested on suspicions related to the Epstein case. These developments have cast a shadow on the royal family during the period of the planned visit.

Following the Washington events, King Charles III will continue his travels with a visit to Bermuda.

Why it matters

State visits between the U.S. and U.K. serve as significant diplomatic events underscoring the enduring alliance between the two nations. This particular trip coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence, reflecting a milestone in transatlantic relations. The visit also occurs amid international tensions involving Iran and internal controversies within the British royal family, underscoring the complex political and diplomatic context.

Background

State visits by British monarchs to the United States have a long history, with Queen Elizabeth II making four visits during her reign. King Charles, as Prince of Wales, was a frequent visitor to the U.S. The planned state dinner at the White House is a traditional highlight of such visits, symbolizing respect and cooperation between the two nations’ leaders.

Recent strained interactions between U.K. and U.S. leadership, partly related to differing approaches to Middle East conflict and internal U.K. political issues, provide important context for the visit. The involvement of members of the royal family in ongoing legal controversies has also drawn international attention.
