Three males—two young men and a teenager—have been remanded in custody after being charged with arson linked to a fire that destroyed four ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer charity in London.
The fire occurred on March 23 in Golders Green, a neighborhood known for its large Jewish population, and involved four vehicles operated by Hatzola Northwest, a local emergency care organization. The blaze caused oxygen cylinders in the ambulances to explode, resulting in damage to a nearby apartment block from broken windows. Authorities reported no injuries from the incident.
The suspects, British nationals Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, along with a 17-year-old of dual British-Pakistani nationality, appeared before Westminster Magistrates Court on charges of arson and reckless endangerment of life. The court did not receive pleas during the 45-minute hearing. The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will be held at a youth detention center.
Counterterrorism police are investigating the fire as a potential antisemitic hate crime. They are also examining a claim of responsibility from a group with possible ties to Iran but have yet to classify the incident as terrorism. Prosecutor Emma Harraway stated there is “significant evidence that this was a premeditated and targeted attack against the Jewish community.”
A fourth individual was also arrested in connection with the fire, while two other men previously arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life have been released on bail. The three charged defendants are scheduled to appear at London’s Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, on April 24.
