Authorities in the Bahamas are actively searching for an American woman who went missing on Saturday after reportedly falling off a boat near the island of Abaco. The incident occurred during a sail from Hope Town to Elbow Cay, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
The woman’s husband, also a U.S. national, reported that they were aboard an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy when she fell overboard with the boat keys, causing the engine to cut out. Strong currents then swept her out to sea, and he lost sight of her.
Afterward, the husband paddled the dinghy for several hours and reached shore at the Marsh Harbor Boat Yard around 4 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, he informed others of his wife’s disappearance, prompting an immediate alert to authorities.
The search effort involves the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Royal Bahamas Defence Force, and Hope Town fire officials, with assistance from volunteers and U.S. agencies. The U.S. Coast Guard Miami Sector provided air support during the Sunday search. The investigation remains in an active search-and-rescue phase as of Monday.
Authorities have urged community members with any information related to the woman’s disappearance to come forward or submit anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers. Both the woman and her husband have not been publicly identified.
Why it matters
This case highlights ongoing safety concerns for boaters in the Bahamas, where maritime regulations are reportedly lax. A U.S. State Department advisory issued in March 2025 warned travelers that boating in the Bahamas is not well regulated and noted past injuries and fatalities linked to watercraft operated by unlicensed individuals or under precarious conditions.
The advisory further advised travelers to heed local weather and marine alerts, a precaution especially pertinent given the strong currents implicated in this disappearance.
