Artemis II Crew Prepares for Historic Flyby of Moon’s Far Side

The Artemis II mission is poised to become the first human spaceflight to venture farther from Earth than ever before as its crew approaches the Moon’s far side. Astronauts aboard the spacecraft, including commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, are preparing for a critical phase of their historic journey.

The Artemis II crew is currently about 180,000 miles from Earth, conducting final preparations for their lunar flyby. This mission’s trajectory will take them around the Moon’s far side, a region never before navigated by humans, marking a significant milestone in deep space exploration.

Each crew member has been actively engaged in mission operations and communications, maintaining contact with NASA personnel while gathering data and completing tasks necessary for the journey. The mission specialists bring significant spaceflight experience, with Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen contributing prior time in orbit, supporting the mission’s objectives.

Why it matters

Artemis II represents a vital step in NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface and establish sustainable exploration by the late 2020s. By orbiting the Moon’s far side, the mission will test critical spacecraft systems, life support, and crew health during prolonged deep-space travel—essential preparations for future lunar landing missions and eventual human trips to Mars.

Background

Artemis II follows Artemis I, an uncrewed test flight completed in 2022 that validated the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft operations around the Moon. The Artemis program is part of NASA’s long-term plan to foster international partnerships and build infrastructure for space colonization efforts. This mission will also build on technologies and protocols to protect astronauts from radiation and operate spacecraft autonomously far from Earth’s immediate support.
